David K. Spencer

David Spencer founded the Law Offices of David K. Spencer, P.C. after almost 15 years working in law and business.  He started his legal career in the tax department of Sullivan & Cromwell and has since worked at Bank of America, HSBC and BNP Paribas as a front office banker at various desks including structured products, equity derivatives and tax equity placement.  David received his J.D. (magna cum laude, Order of the Coif) and LL.M. (Tax Policy Fellowship recipient) from New York University School of Law in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

Adjunct Professor at NYU School of Law, Graduate Tax Program:
Accounting for Tax Consequences
, a self-created course on ASC 740 in theory and practice.  Topics include GAAP (and IFRS) treatment of DTAs (Deferred Tax Assets), DTLs (Deferred Tax Liabilities), tax reserves, APB 23 elections, direct vs indirect method for tax credits, the “simultaneous equations method”, tax accounting treatment of equity-based compensation and goodwill and tax attributes in purchase accounting applied in the context of a business combination.

Civic Committments

One of Dave’s passions is boxing, specifically with Haymakers for Hope, a cancer research benefit organization. HfH’s mission is to knockout cancer the only way we know how, by literally fighting for a cure. They give everyday men and women the opportunity to fight back against this terrible disease by training for, and competing in charity boxing events to raise money and awareness.

David: “I want a better world for my two children; I want a world where they have better treatments for cancer for their generation than we have for ours.”

In addition, David co-founded the ‘BPC Chamber’, a local business league for Battery Park City bringing local businesses together to network and support good causes.  BPC Chamber is a 501(c)(6) business league.

Family Life

David comes from a family of passionate academics and artists, committed to both individual and community vitality. David draws his passion for numeracy from his mathematician father, and devotes his talents to helping people and businesses navigate our complex financial world.
